A LEADERSHIP JOURNEY IN POETRY: GOD’S COWBOY PASTOR

Às margens do São Francisco,

no quente sertão baiano,

bem no mês de fevereiro,

73 era o ano

On the banks of the San Francisco

[river], in the Summer of Bahia [a

state of Brazil], in the month of

February, 73 was then the year.

Nasci Adean da Costa,

Queiroz herdei do meu pai,

Seu Antônio, que saudade!

A lembrança longe vai!…

I was born Adean da Costa,

Queiroz is my family name;

from my father, Seu [Mister]

Antônio, actually my memory

came.

Minha mãe, Dona Vandete,

mulher forte e valente,

soube com sabedoria

tornar-me homem decente.

Oh, my mother, Mrs. Vandete,

strong woman and very brave,

yes, she knew with much wisdom

how to make me not a slave.

Minha família foi um ninho,

foi escola, foi abrigo;

Seu Antônio especialmente

foi um pai, um mestre e amigo.

Oh, my family was a nest,

was a school, was a shelter;

and my father was special,

being father, friend and master.

Sua história emociona

pelo esforço, pelo empenho,

por vitórias alcançadas;

dele muito orgulho tenho.

Yes, his story was exciting.

For his strength and attitude,

for the victories he accomplished,

I feel pride and gratitude.

Trabalhava o dia todo

e a noite estudava;

tinha um sonho e, por ele,

o meu pai se esforçava.

He worked all day long;

he studied at night;

had a dream, and for his dream,

he’d make everything right.

Se tornou um engenheiro,

deu conforto para os seus,

foi um homem de sucesso

e por ele louvo a Deus.

He became an engineer;

could well his family raise;

that’s why through all my life,

thankfully, my God I praise.

Sempre fui menino esperto,

eu amava o interior,

lá o boi, cavalo e ovelha…

Eu, por bichos, tinha amor.

I became a smart boy; I enjoyed

the country lands; for the cows,

the sheep and horses, showed

them love with my own hands.

Aprendi já bem cedinho

como bem negociar:

Alugava a bicicleta

a meninos do lugar.

I’ve learned, since I was small,

how to make a good strike:

To the boys in neighborhood,

used to rent well my bike.

O dinheiro eram pombos

– a moeda que corria.

Por dez voltas com a “bike”,

um pombinho eu recebia.

But the “money” were doves—

current money for the day:

for ten rounds with the bike,

yes, one dove, each boy had to pay.

Recebia tantos pombos

pra alugar o meu brinquedo

que minha mãe, muito assustada,

quase já morreu de medo.

I received so many doves just

for “renting” my bike (a toy)

that my mother—scared to death—

couldn’t believe in me (a boy).

Fui feliz na minha infância,

fui moleque de verdade;

aprendi a ser pessoa

com sorriso e seriedade.

I was happy in my childhood;

always being a real kid;

and I learned to be a person,

being serious in what I did.

A despeito dessas flores,

que enfeitavam minha vida,

tive, sim, os meus espinhos,

que causaram em mim ferida.

In spite of all the flowers,

I had also some thorns;

after bright and sunny days,

I faced also thunderstorms.

Tinha apenas 7 anos,

quando soube de um problema:

Minha tia e seu esposo

sim, viviam um dilema.

I was just seven years old,

when I knew my uncle beat

his wife (my father’s sister);

that action was so concrete,

Ele, um homem violento,

só brigava com minha tia,

ameaçava agredi-la,

e, por fim, chegou o dia.

that my aunt needed protection

against such a violent man,

who continued threatening her…

But the day was coming when.

Ele, mui covardemente,

a sua esposa agrediu.

Ela liga pro meu pai

e, conselho, já pediu.

After being cowardly beaten,

oh, my aunt called twice,

and my father gave her,

yes, the following advice:

Se você sair de casa,

eu talvez possa ajudar.

Moradia, eu lhe consigo

e lugar pra trabalhar.

If you leave soon your house,

I can help you get out of that:

Room and board, and place to

work, we are glad to help you get.

O meu pai ficou seguro

que sua irmã ele ajudava;

entretanto, não sabia

tanto mal que o aguardava.

And my father took for granted

that his sister he’d support;

never knew his brother-in-law

would end up in criminal court.

Bem no dia já marcado,

fomos lá buscar minha tia,

seus pertences pessoais,

coisas que ela bem queria.

In the day already settled,

we went there to pick her up,

yes, my aunt with her belongings,

but, instead, there they showed

up…

Ao chegar em sua casa,

o marido apareceu.

Estavam, lá na minha tia,

dois vaqueiros, pai e eu.

…two cowboys (the bodyguards)

and my uncle, who was furious.

Then my aunt, who was there,

and my father got curious.

E depois de discussão

entre o homem e meu pai,

o covarde dá um tiro,

e meu pai no chão já cai

After arguing with my father,

right in front of his house door,

the coward fired, then, a shot,

and my father fell to the floor.

Quando vi aquela cena,

eu corri de onde estava,

abracei meu pai no chão

que de dor agonizava.

When I saw that horror scene,

I ran to embrace my dear dad,

who was shaking in great pain,

but soon I saw that he was dead.

Me propus lá nesse dia,

fixar a minha sorte:

Eu, ficando já maior,

do meu pai vingar a morte.

I swore on that day

that, when becoming bigger,

I’d revenge my father’s death,

I, myself, would pull the trigger.

Meu avô me estimulava

para isso não esquecer:

Faça tudo pra vingar-se

logo que você crescer.

My granddad encouraged me

never, never to forget

such a promise to revenge,

when older should I get.

Cedo, amadureci;

me tornei homem-criança;

conquistei logo respeito;

da família, confiança.

Very soon I came to age;

I became a child-adult;

from the family, got respect,

much trust and no insult.

Me empenhei pra ser honesto,

trabalhei e fiz negócio,

ocupei todo meu tempo

e não dei espaço ao ócio.

I strived to be most honest;

I worked and made a trade;

occupying all my time;

left no time to be afraid.

Antes de outra vil tragédia,

um milagre aconteceu:

Uma família adventista

na minha vida apareceu.

Oh, instead of facing evil,

yes, a miracle took place:

Adventists of a family

spoke to us, yes, face-to-face.

Tal família, pra minha mãe,

disse sobre um internato.

Minha mãe se empenhou

para me enviar de fato.

Such a family, being concerned

that I should be secure,

told my mother of a school,

where she could send me for sure.

Tive a oportunidade

de ter sido enviado

pra escola Adventista

onde lá fui educado.

I, then, had the opportunity

of having been sent out there:

to a school of Adventists,

where I met my Great Father.

Estudando lá no ENA

logo lá me batizei,

me tornei um seguidor

de Jesus, o grande Rei.

At ENA, I got baptized,

and decided on a thing:

To become a faithful follower

of my Father and my great King.

Conheci a Adielma,

minha esposa e companheira,

que tornou-se minha amiga

e bem sábia conselheira.

Then I met dear Adielma,

my wife and adviser,

who became my loyal friend,

and companion much wiser.

Ela deu-me dois presentes,

filhos muito abençoados:

Adean Júnior e o Adson

a Deus foram dedicados.

Yes, she gave me two good pres-

ents, these two sons so much

blessed: Adean Junior and Adson.

“They are God’s,” we expressed.

Comecei como um aluno,

me tornando um servidor,

e a igreja me chamou

pra servir como gestor.

I started as a student,

soon becoming servant leader;

and the church called me

to its sheep be a good feeder.

Tenho bem servido a Igreja,

bem usado a liderança,

inspirando as pessoas

com o sopro da esperança.

I’ve been serving my church,

leading it to always strive

for the hope, and inspire people

with the breath of God’s life.

Após ir pro IAENE,

pela ABAC eu passei,

Deus levou-me pra Recife,

e meu rumo bem mudei.

After going to IAENE,

I worked at ABAC,

God, however, changed my life,

taking me to Recife back.

Deus tornou-me um pastor,

quis maior meu compromisso.

Ah! Sem eu o merecer,

grato a Deus eu sou por isso.

God wanted my commitment,

oh, to be so much bigger:

For being pastor—not deserving—

I thank God, and Christ my Leader.

Sobre este ministério,

um poeta, amigo meu,

enviou-me uns versinhos

sobre o que meu Deus me deu.

Oh, a friend, who’s a poet,

sent me some good poetry

that he wrote about me

and about God’s ministry.

[Note by the translator: It is meaningful that another poet (a trovador)— a member of the church where Adean had been a pastor—wrote the following trovas and composed music, in honor of his Pastor Adean].

O vaqueiro virou pastor

vai trocar gado por gente,

mas pra esse novo ofício

não é muito diferente!

The cowboy became a pastor;

but for that new commitment—

changing cattle for the people—

things are not so much different.

Tem que dar ração e água

Pão do céu, Água da vida,

e, se tem um machucado,

põe remédio na ferida.

Pastor gives them food and water,

Bread of Heaven, Water of Life;

if his sheep get so wounded,

He heals them to come alive.

Se o problema é muito grave,

leva pro veterinário

– Criador do universo

sabe o que é necessário

If the problem’s so serious,

he then takes them to the vet—

the Creator of the universe:

He knows how their needs are met.

Com o gado bem cuidado,

resultado aparece:

Com bezerros mais no pasto,

a fazenda então bem cresce.

If the cattle’s carefully taken,

there will be no more disease;

with the calves in the pasture,

then the herd will increase.

Do ofício de vaqueiro,

não precisa abdicar;

dá pra ser as duas coisas,

fácil é conciliar.

From the job of being cowboy,

he doesn’t need to abdicate;

he can do both things well,

being easy to conciliate.

Eu só rogo ao bom Jesus

o Eterno Fazendeiro,

que abençoe esse seu servo

Adean, Pastor vaqueiro.

I pray firmly to the Lord—

in whose “ranch” we all enjoy

working—that our God may bless

Adean, pastor and cowboy.

Fundamentar o trabalho

com boa filosofia

necessário é ao líder

que ele cresça dia-a-dia.

Philosophical foundation

must a leader well display;

so his work has a basis

to be developed everyday.

Demonstrar à sua equipe,

onde vai bem trabalhar,

fundamentos filosóficos

da empresa e do lugar.

Demonstrating to their team

philosophical foundation

is, for leaders, good work

in their own organization.

Evitando os transtornos,

a má fé e a confusão,

tornará a sua empresa

uma forte instituição.

They avoid many troubles,

lack of trust, and bad confusion,

so to turn the organization

into a strong institution.

Ética e espiritualidade

são valores essenciais

pra que o líder obtenha

resultados especiais;

Values, ethics, spirituality:

basic values are for leaders.

To obtain special results,

leaders are Scripture-readers.

tornam a vida equilibrada,

tocam a alma das pessoas

mostram limpas intenções,

que elas são realmente boas.

This will give the equilibrium;

touches deeply people’s souls;

show the people good intentions

to pursue their right goals.

Quem pautar a liderança

na ética e espiritualidade

será líder de sucesso,

é cristão, sim, de verdade.

Who pursues the leadership,

being spiritual, being ethical,

will be truly also a Christian,

and a leader democratical.

Trabalhar a Aprendizagem,

crescimento pessoal

bem amplia os horizontes,

caminhando pro ideal.

Working on their proper learning,

also in their personal growth

helps leaders in their broadening

the horizons toward their goals.

Aprender a cada dia,

e crescer, bem prosperar

é tarefa indispensável

para o líder realizar.

Leading learning day-by-day,

making all the people grow,

here are the fundamental actions

by true leaders for their goal.

Cuidar bem da inteligência,

do bem espiritual,

bem-estar, sim, das pessoas,

da saúde e da moral.

Taking care of the intellect,

of the spiritual welfare,

of the goodness of all people,

of the health, a good care.

Aprender comunicar-se

de maneira eficaz

é papel preponderante

para o líder que é capaz.

Learning to communicate,

in a good, efficient way,

is the role of any leader

acting out in any play.

O que vai em nossa mente

e o que falam nossos lábios

tem que ter a coerência

– coisa para homens sábios.

What is going in our minds,

what words speak our lips

must truly be consistent—

here it is a wise man’s tip.

Levar esta competência

ao trabalho com igreja

torna a igreja esclarecida

pra que nobre ela seja.

If we take this competence

to the work in our church,

this can make people prone

to be noble in their search.

Mentorear um indivíduo

é também discipular,

preparar essa pessoa,

pra, sozinha, caminhar.

Mentoring an individual

also means to be efficient

in preparing the disciple

for the work as self-sufficient.

Como líder desta igreja,

sempre tenho procurado

formar um substituto

muito bem capacitado.

As a leader of this church,

I’ve always tried to inspire

other leaders well prepared

for the mission they aspire.

Preparou Jesus discípulos;

seu exemplo nos deixou:

As pessoas, mentorear;

foi assim que ensinou.

Jesus Christ well prepared

His disciples as their Master;

He gave us the best model

thus to be a real mentor.

Quem só pensa em si mesmo

jamais faz o essencial.

É preciso ter em mente

Responsabilidade Social

Those who are too egocentric

always must keep this in mind:

Be responsible in society;

with the needy be more kind.

Cuidar bem da sociedade,

e cuidar do meio ambiente

é papel de empresa e nós,

não havendo mais carente.

Being responsible in society,

taking care of circumstances

is the role of everybody

with justice in all the stances.

Se é papel de toda empresa

e de todo cidadão,

bem amar a si e ao próximo

é dever do bom cristão.

Being the role of any company,

and of any good citizen,

“Loving others as thyself”

is the duty of any Christian.

Bem melhor cuidar das gentes

e melhor usar dinheiro

são do líder objetivos,

talvez deles o primeiro.

Taking better care of people,

better use of others’ money

are the goals of any leader,

at least, his testimony.

É preciso lembrar sempre:

Se pessoas eu cuidar,

a saúde financeira

mais estável vai ficar

It is needful to remember:

Helping people every day

means that our financial health

more stable will stay.

Como líder da igreja,

cuido bem de cada amigo

pra que o lado financeiro

jamais corra algum perigo.

As a leader of the church,

I take care of each friend

so that their financial health

never runs a risky trend.

Se há normas e processos

para a empresa organizar,

há progresso inevitável.

Ninguém pode duvidar.

Having norms and processes

for the firm to organize,

there’s no doubt that progress

will surely maximize.

As políticas da empresa,

sendo bem orientadas,

suas metas definidas

podem ser bem alcançadas.

All the policies of firms,

being wisely oriented, all their

goals—being well defined—can

be truly implemented.

Não somente na empresa,

na igreja e em sociedade,

se há ordem, há progresso,

há sucesso de verdade.

Not only in the company, in

the church and in society, there

being order, there’s progress,

great success in full variety.

Implantar uma cultura

no processo da empresa,

isto ajuda o funcionário

pra que ele melhor seja, . . .

Implementing a new culture

in the process of a firm,

this can help the employees

to decide and to affirm . . .

. . . tenha claros objetivos,

regras de comportamento;

facilite os processos,

e agilize o atendimento.

. . . being clear in all their aims,

following rules in their behavior,

making easy all the processes,

being the servant of our Saviour.

Todos dentro da empresa

devem já saber direito

de cultura e seus valores

pra sentirem seu efeito.

Everybody in the company

should already know well

of the culture and their values

so to never feel in hell.

Implementar as mudanças

pra empresa melhorar

requer líder de coragem

e um flexível olhar.

Implementing needed changes

so the company can improve:

This requires so much courage

that a leader must then prove.

Sim, em nossa sociedade

tudo muda num segundo.

É preciso estar atento

nos eventos neste mundo.

In society there are changes.

Changes happen in such a way

that one needs to give attention

to the events of every day.

Novas tecnologias,

novas formas de pensar,

novo jeito, novo tudo

para o líder se ajustar.

New and modern technologies,

plus new forms of thought and

thinking, here and now, leaders

are called to renew their ways of

leading.

Avaliar é um olhar,

um olhar bem apurado,

e tentar diagnosticar,

observar com mui cuidado.

Evaluation is a looking—

yes, a looking so precise—

to attempt a true diagnosis,

taking care with compromise.

Só se encontram as respostas

a partir da avaliação,

na empresa, na igreja,

em qualquer instituição.

We may find the answers needed,

starting with the evaluation,

in the firms, in the church,

in the man’s organization.

Ah! Um líder competente,

bem humilde e dedicado,

pede até que seu trabalho

também seja avaliado.

Oh, a competent leader—

who is humble and dedicated—

even asks that his work

also be evaluated.

Sobre empreendedorismo

é mister observar:

Todo líder que se preza

deve o novo começar.

On the entrepreneurship, it’s

necessary to observe that any

conscious leader creates the

new and wants to serve.

O conceito é bem fácil:

Recriar, falar, fazer

e ter muita iniciativa

para bem empreender.

The concept is very easy:

Recreate, speak and do—

with self-initiative—

undertake and then redo.

O país precisa disto:

da família e da igreja,

grandes empreendedores

pra alcançar o que deseja.

Our country needs church

and family institutions;

and, from great entrepreneurs,

very good contributions.

Quem diria que um vaqueiro

do interior lá da Bahia,

pelas mãos de sua igreja,

para a Andrews ele iria!

Who would imagine: A cowboy—

taken by the fellowship

of a church—would finish

AU Master in Leadership!

Um Mestrado em Liderança,

contatando gente boa;

crescimento integral,

crendo em Deus que o abençoa.

There I met other leaders—

conscious of the stewardship

of growing all in full—

serving God in daily worship.

Eu sou grato aos professores,

a colegas, também sou

e a esta instituição

“Obrigado” também dou.

I’m grateful to my teachers,

my colleagues, the organization,

but I praise my Redeemer,

God in Christ, my salvation.

Tudo aquilo que aprendi,

todo o meu conhecimento,

devo tudo a Deus na vida!

Glória a Deus neste momento!

Everything I have learned—

even things that seem so odd—

I owe the Lord all my life!

All the glory be to God.
